Essential Oil Alternatives: Face Toner Diy

Restoring the skin’s natural balance doesn’t have to come at the cost of stripping your skin of vital nutrients. Too many over-the-counter facial products are laced with perfumes and synthetics that actually lead to more serious skin issues.

The Natural Way

Adding drops of our Age Defy Synergy Blend to your beauty routine can yield wondrous results. From a cellular level, Age Defy reduces inflammation while it sustains smoother, more radiant skin.

In place of harsh, commercial toners, witch hazel helps remove dead skin and eliminate toxins. It also naturally fights wrinkles and acne while helping to calm puffiness and irritation. Lavender and Frankincense are packed with smoothing properties and antioxidants which support healthy skin.

Hi Cherie! If you’re combining Rosehip oil with two hydrous ingredients – witch hazel and aloe vera – you’ll need a solubilizer to combine the oil and water-based ingredients and a preservative. For in depth formulation advice, please reach out to us at aaa@edensgarden.com.

I want to make an 8 ounce batch of toner using witch hazel, aloe and rosehip. How much of each should I use to create the 8 ounces? Thanks!

Hi Jessica! You’ll need to ask the manufacturer you purchase the Polysorbate 20 from for directions on how much to use, but in general, you’ll need to use about equal parts Polysorbate and essential oil or between 1-2% Polysorbate 20.

If I use Polysorbate 20 instead of the 190-proof alcohol, do I use the same 1 tbsp amount or is there a different ratio?

Hi Sheri! The alcohol is a very high proof, of which Everclear is a typical brand. 190 proof is required for the oil to properly mix in the water. You can also replace the alcohol with a solubilizer such as Polysorbate 20.

On the DIY face toner – is the alcohol just the normal rubbing alcohol?

Hi Francesca! 190 proof alcohol or a solubilizer such as Polysorbate 20 can be used to combine oils and water. Unfortunately, 70 proof alcohol and witch hazel will not emulsify oil in water.

Hi! If I don’t have 190 proof alcohol but have 70 proof alcohol, witch hazel hydrolsol, and lavender witch hazel by Thayers (alcohol free), would any of these be okay to use as a substitute for the 190 proof alcohol and witch hazel that isn’t alcohol free? I hope that question didn’t confuse anyone!! Thanks bunches!!

Hi Megan! 190 proof alcohol helps to solubilize the essential oils in the water and witch hazel. It also helps preserve the product. Applying a moisturizer following the toner will help to offset any drying effect.

It’s hard to say how the ingredients from your moisturizer will effect the essential oils (if at all) without seeing the list of ingredients but if you’d like to send them to us, we’d be happy to review them for you. You can email our aromatherapist at aaa@edensgarden.com for this.

If you’d like to use shea butter in a moisturizer, you can try this body butter DIY but replace mango butter with shea butter and the essential oils with the EOs of your choosing: https://www.edensgarden.com/blogs/news/diy-3-ingredient-body-butter

Hello, I am excited to try making your DIY toner with age defy and witch Hazel. I have a few questions about the 190 proof alcohol: Where and what type should I look for, and won’t alcohol irritate, strip, and/or dry out my skin? Can you please tell me the necessity for adding this to the DIY toner?

Also, I would like to add either skin love or age defy to my moisturizer. I am happy with my moisturizer, and it is fragrance free but not a “natural” moisturizer. How might this (the synthetic ingredients already in my moisturizer) potentially effect the performance of these oils when used on my face, neck and chest? I am also thinking of experimenting with organic Shea butter and some of your oils, too. Perhaps this is another option for a DIY? Not sure as I haven’t tried Shea butter. Thanks so much for your work and your products! I really love them. 💗
