Pet Safety: Essential oils are generally safe to diffuse around adult cats and dogs intermittently. Ensure the room you’re diffusing in is well ventilated and that your pet can leave if desired. Discontinue use if you notice any adverse reaction. Avoid topical use and diffusing around young pets, small animals or pets with health problems.
- Lemon Basil essential oil is made via steam distillation. In steam distillation, plant material is placed in a still, water is added, then heat is applied to the unit. As water heats, plants release their essential oil, the oil rises with steam droplets that are sucked into a pipe and the oil and water are then separated. While it may not be possible to make Lemon Basil essential oil at home without a still, you can make aromatic hydrosol water that contains many of the same therapeutic benefits as essential oil. - Lemon Basil essential oil, Ocimum citriodorum, is a chemotype in the Basil Family. It is also known as Basil ct. Citral. Aromatically it is fresh, lemony and delightfully uplifting. Therapeutically, it can be used to quell anxious feelings and depression as well as relieve fatigue and even nausea and works well in topical massage oil blends. It's also noted as having an ability to improve memory issues and just like its sister Sweet Basil, Ocimum basilicum, can be used to help with headaches and migraines. For topical applications on the skin, it is advised to use Lemon Basil at low dilutions, 1.4% in one ounce of carrier oil.
- In perfumery, scents have ‘notes.’ A scent can be a top, middle or base note. Lemon Basil is considered a top note. Each aroma note reacts differently based on its volatility. Top notes tend to be the most volatile, meaning they don’t last that long after they’ve been exposed to air. However, top notes are generally the strongest aroma when you first smell a scent. On the other hand, base notes are the least volatile, meaning they last much longer and are not the strongest aroma when you first experience a scent but they grow stronger after being exposed to air.
- Aromatically, Lemon Basil blends well with other citrus oils such as Bergamot and Lemon as well as floral oils such as Clary Sage. Herbals such as Peppermint and Bergamot Mint and Balm Mint Bush will give Lemon Basil a more lively aroma. Base notes and wood oils such as Sandalwood can make this oil safer to use in skin applications. If looking for substitutions, Lemon Verbena and Melissa make very good choices.
- Essential oils are powerful, concentrated substances so a little goes a long way. Two of the most effective ways to use them are by way of inhalation and topical use. Ingesting Lemon Basil essential oil is not the optimal way to achieve its benefits as it lacks nutrients found in the whole herb. What’s more, the essential oil is often far more expensive than the herb that produces it. Therefore, we recommend using fresh herbs in cooking rather than essential oil.

SWELLING: Make a salve by melting 2 oz of beeswax in a double boiler. Once melted, add in 1 oz of Wheat Germ, 30 drops Lemon Basil, 15 drops Sandalwood Hawaiian and 9 drops Black Pepper. Scoop out and apply to problem areas.
ACHES: Create a massage oil by combining 1/2 cup Guava Seed, 35 drops Lemon Basil, 20 drops Bergamot Mint and 17 drops Hemp essential oil.
COOLING: In a glass spray bottle, combine 1 oz distilled water, 8 drops Lemon Basil, 5 drops Geranium, 5 drops Lavender Spike and Polysorbate 20 (manufacturer’s recommended amount). Shelf life: 1 week
