Frequently Asked Questions
How to make scented pine cones with essential oils?
  • Pine essential oil (Pinus sylvestris) offers an invigorating, forest-fresh aroma that can help you breathe better. Because of this, it makes a great addition to naturally scented DIYs and home products. One of our favorite DIYs to make with Pine essential oil, especially around the holidays, are scented pine cones and it couldn’t be more simple. To make your own, take store-bought pine cones or pick your own. If picking your own, soak pine cones in warm water and soap. Preheat oven to 220 degrees F, place pine cones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and heat for 25-30 minutes. Monitor the pine cones while heating as oven temperatures may vary. Let cool, then place pine cones in a bowl. Sprinkle 20-30 drops of Pine oil (about 2-3 drops per cone) over the pine cones, and mix them up to spread out the oil and scent. Enjoy!
How to make Pine essential oil?
  • Pine essential oil is made via steam distillation. In steam distillation, plant material is placed in a still, water is added, then heat is applied to the unit. As water heats, plants release their essential oil, the oil rises with steam droplets that are sucked into a pipe and the oil and water are then separated. While it may not be possible to make Pine essential oil at home, you can make aromatic hydrosol water that contains many of the same therapeutic benefits as essential oil. Click here for instructions on how to make your own hydrosol.
Is Pine essential oil safe for pregnancy?
  • Pine essential oil is safe to use while pregnant when following proper safety guidelines. It is not recommended that you use essential oils in the first trimester, which is considered the most delicate time in pregnancy. It is recommended that you do not use essential oils frequently, but rather minimally. Dilute your essential oil to 1% during topical application that you don’t overwhelm your system. Lastly, if you’re having complications, it may be best to avoid essential oils.
Can I clean with Scots Pine essential oil?
  • Pine has been used throughout history to help clear fungal infection, ease allergies, clear sinuses and boost clarity. Today, its clean and earthy aroma paired with its antimicrobial activity make it a popular addition to cleaners. To make your own cleaner using Pine oil, combine 1 oz 190-proof grain alcohol and 80 drops Pine oil in a glass spray bottle. Let sit for a few hours before adding 3 oz distilled water. Shake gently to combine and spray around surfaces, linens and high-traffic areas to refresh your space.
Can Scots Pine essential oil treat seizures?
  • Anecdotal evidence suggests that Pine oil may assist with seizures, however, studies have not yet proven this. Seizures can be caused by missed medications, alcohol consumption, lack of sleep, increased stress, illness and PMS. For some epileptics, aromas can be triggering, regardless of the quality of the oil or brand. When it comes to pinning down which essential oils may be triggering or beneficial to epileptic individuals, the safest advice we can give is to work with a doctor and aromatherapist who can provide you with safe guidelines that meet your individual needs. The bottom line – epilepsy is a complex condition and aromatherapy safety guidelines for those with epilepsy cannot be one-size-fits-all.
