Do you regularly have cracked and dry lips? Whether you spent too much time in the sun, came back from a trip in the mountains, or just naturally have dry lips, no one enjoys the feeling nor the look of dried out lips.

Fortunately for you, we’ve got an easy fix for that problem—one that you can make right from the comfort of your home in just a couple of minutes.

What is it?

Homemade therapeutic lip balm (or chapstick). That’s right, with Edens Garden DIY essential oil lip balm recipes, your lips will smell amazing, look fabulous, and stay hydrated no matter where you go or who you smooch.

Ready to unlock our secret to plush, beautiful lips? Then let’s get cooking with the best essential oils for lips.

DIY Lip Oil Ingredients

First things first, if you’re trying to make natural lip oil and balm, you’re going to need to buy some supplies. Most of the items you’ll require can either be found at the store or purchased online for little cost. And once you have made the initial investment, you’ll be able to make dozens of batches.

Be careful, though! After you and your friends try one combination of essential oils for lips, you may have trouble stopping. Seriously, it’s addicting—mixing and matching is just too fun! And since Edens Garden has more than 250 single oils and synergy blends, the possibilities are seemingly endless for your homemade lip treatment.

To start, for a single batch you’ll need the following supplies—a small saucepan, stove, and a funnel small enough to pour your balm into the lip balm tubes. In addition, you’ll require:

2 Tablespoons of Shea Butter

Shea butter is commonly used in a variety of cosmetics due to its moisturizing properties. You can often find shea butter as a main ingredient in lip products. Throw it in your homemade lip balm recipe to say goodbye to cracked, dry lips. Extracted from the nuts of the African Shea tree it’s commonly used to help alleviate several skin issues, including:

  • Dry skin

  • Chapped lips

  • Blemishes

  • Wrinkles

  • Sunburn

  • Dermatitis

  • Allergies

To find the right shea butter, try a local farmers market or health store near you.

2 Tablespoons of Sweet Almond or Jojoba Oil

Lip balms that are completely wax-based tend to have limited effects that don’t last long. It provides temporary relief, but not longer-term hydration. Using a wax-based ingredient such as beeswax can ultimately do more harm than good and can even result in dryer lips than before! Consider creating a DIY lip balm formula with oil, butter, and wax for your cracked lips to reap the most hydrating benefits.

When you combine oils with waxes, they can penetrate the lips’ surface layer and get to the source. Additionally, the oil provides an extra glossy look. And who doesn’t want that? Take our advice when creating your own lip balm and don't forget your pure essential oils!

1 Tablespoon of Wax

You have a few options when it comes to the wax base. What you choose won’t have a huge impact on the final product, but is more a matter of personal preference.

We typically recommend using soy-based wax. However, common alternatives include beeswax or candelilla should you prefer a vegan option. That said, if you use candelilla, you only need a half tablespoon of the wax. Throw in your half tablespoon of wax and a few drops of your pure essential oils for a lip balm formula that will blow your mind.

Balm Containers

Similarly, what you put the lip balm in is up to your discretion. Typically, you’ll choose from one of two primary choices:

  • Lip Balm Tins – This is our favorite method. It’s the easiest to fill up and apply. And if you want to get fancy and make it look professional (particularly for gifts) you can print up labels and slap them on the tin.

  • Lip Balm Tubes – Although these aren’t as easy to fill or reuse, they make perfect pocket sized lip balms for day-to-day use. We prefer the alternative method since (as you probably know) it's so easy to lose the dang tubes! However, it’s completely up to you. If you  do go the balm tube route, consider purchasing lip balm pouring trays to make your life simpler.

Essential Oils

Last but certainly not least, you’re going to need to select your favorite essential oils that are lip-nourishing. Essential oils have a number of restorative and rejuvenation properties that can help moisturize lips, ensuring that they look fantastic around the clock. Consider using essential oils for lip balm to take your lip hydration to the next level.

While the choice is up to you, our favorite combinations include:

  • Orange essential oil & Jojoba carrier oil – A great summer lip balm combination, the citrus in Orange essential oil helps nourish dry skin thanks to its natural anti-inflammatory properties. Orange Around The World essential oil is particularly well rounded as it contains several of the best Orange EO varieties all in one single oil. In addition, the aromas induce a sense of calm. Similarly, Jojoba carrier oil smells great and is a popular topical oil that can help provide relief from dry and itchy skin. Combined with the mesmerizing smell of citrus essential oils, it will remind you of summer all day long.

  • Clary Sage essential oil & Prickly Pear Seed carrier oil Clary Sage essential oil is a strong aromatherapeutic that leads to a sense of calm. It also has cooling properties that soothe the skin. It pairs nicely with a Prickly Pear Seed carrier oil that is ideal for dry skin. Add in a few drops of your Clary Sage essential oil into your DIY lip mask and use before bed. This will keep your lips moisturized all night and can help bring you to a state of relaxation.

  • Peppermint & Rosemary essential oils – Perfect for the holiday season, Peppermint essential oil doesn’t only smell fantastic, it also has antibacterial properties that can help reduce swelling and cuts. When combined with the natural qualities of Rosemary essential oil, the result is a refreshing aromatic blend.

  • Vanilla CO2 & Avocado carrier oil – Vanilla is a sweetly smelling mood lifter that helps reduce skin irritation. Avocado carrier oil adds a balancing and nourishing touch.

  • Soothe & Smooth synergy blend – Often used on dry skin due to its moisturizing properties. The combination of soothing oils gives Soothe & Smooth Synergy Blend a pleasant aroma and soothing elements.

Essential Oil Lip Balm Recipe Instructions

Now that you’ve got all of your ingredients and supplies, are you ready to get cooking?

Great! Let’s get to it.

  • Step 1 – Turn the stove to low heat and allow the small saucepan to heat up. In a double boiler, melt the wax, oil, and butter until they become one amorphous blob. Gently stir while keeping an eye on the mixture. Make sure that it NEVER boils.

  • Step 2 – Move the saucepan off the stove, allowing it to slightly cool, but not so much that it starts to harden in the pan.

  • Step 3 –  Add in 5 drops of your favorite Edens Garden essential oil.

  • Step 4 – Pour the natural lip balm into your lip balm tube or lip balm container of choice. Let it cool.

  • Step 5 –  Apply caps or labels for that perfect finishing touch.

  • Step 6 – Apply to your lips and fish for compliments.

That’s it. So simple. In less than ten minutes you can make your very own DIY lip care using pure essential oils. So, are you ready to say hello to soft lips and kiss chapped lips goodbye? You know what to do.

Hi Marie! Low heat on a stove is typically between 200-300 degrees Fahrenheit. Hope that helps!

Question! You mentioned low heat but temperature would that be exactly? I am using a candle wax melter with a range of 86-257℉.

Hi Luna! This recipe makes about 5 oz of product. If you’re using .15 oz lip balm tubes, you will yield about 33 lip balms.
