Why Our Natural Perfumes Are Safer

Who said perfume has to be bad for you? That was the question we at EG asked ourselves a year ago when we began developing our natural Perfume collection. Made with 100% pure essential oils, these Perfumes are unlike any commercial fragrance in that they’re much safer. Safe products begin with pure, quality ingredients which is why we believe this is Perfume as it should be.


We start with a base of grain alcohol that is so pure, it’s drinkable. A bitter denaturing agent is then added, making the alcohol undrinkable, thus SD stands for “specially denatured.” Unlike perfumer’s alcohol, which is a combination of alcohols and harmful chemicals, and isopropyl alcohol, SD alcohol is not as harsh or drying but rather cools and refreshes the skin. SD alcohol is also a great carrier that helps diffuse essential oils, and evaporates quickly, leaving behind the potent aroma of the oils. What’s more is that when used in conjunction with skin nourishing ingredients, SD alcohol is even more palatable to the skin, which brings us to our next ingredient.


Rated as a low hazard ingredient by the Environmental Working Group, propanediol is skin-loving, increases cell hydration and is naturally derived. Propylene glycol is closely related to propanediol in structure, and is often used instead of propanediol because it is cheaper. Unfortunately, propylene glycol is irritating at concentrations as low as 2% and stops collagen production. The propanediol in our natural Perfumes is also environmentally friendly, using 40% less energy to produce and reducing greenhouse gases by 20%. Edens Garden formulators thus chose propanediol for its nourishing benefits, low irritating potential, because it’s naturally derived and because it’s safer than the alternatives.


Using essential oils in the Edens Garden Perfume collection was a given, not only because we at EG love them, but also because fragrance as an ingredient in cosmetics can have a variety of health concerns. Typically, fragrances contain solvents, stabilizers, UV-absorbers, preservatives, and dyes.


Whereas pure essential oils are derived from plant parts, fragrances are commonly a combination of synthetic chemicals, often derived from petroleum. According to the EWG, the average fragrance contains 14 chemicals not listed on the label. When sprayed or applied, many of these undisclosed chemicals are inhaled and absorbed through the skin. Over time, the chemicals accumulate in the body and result in health issues.
