Frequently Asked Questions
How to make Cardamom essential oil?
  • Cardamom essential oil, known in Latin as Elettaria cardamomum, is made via steam distillation. In steam distillation, plant material is placed in a still, water is added, then heat is applied to the unit. As water heats, plants release their essential oil, the oil rises with steam droplets that are sucked into a pipe and the oil and water are then separated. While it may not be possible to make Cardamom essential oil at home, you can make aromatic hydrosol water that contains many of the same therapeutic benefits as essential oil. Click here for instructions on how to make your own hydrosol.
How to use Cardamom essential oil?
  • There are several ways to effectively use Cardamom essential oil and obtain its benefits, including 1.) Add 10 drops to your essential oil diffuser per 100 ml of water for respiratory health. 2.) Add 10 drops to an Essential Oil Inhaler and take it with you for on-the-go therapeutic use. 3.) Create a spray by combining 20 drops Cardamom and 1 tablespoon 190-proof grain alcohol in a glass spray bottle. After a few hours, add 3 tablespoons of distilled water. Spray onto surfaces as an antiseptic and in the air to refresh your space.
What blends well with Cardamom essential oil?
  • Citrus oils such as Sweet Orange and Bergamot make excellent choices in oil blends with Cardamom to improve mental clarity. Floral oils make lovely mates including Rose and Ylang Ylang and are a good combo that lowers blood pressure as well as in preparations for skincare. If you think of the lovely aromatics when cooking with spices that flavor Indian food, a small amount of Clove and Cinnamon used in a belly massage oil blend with Cardamom can add a lot of spicy warmth which help strengthen digestion and can be used for colds and to relieve chest congestion. Other spices also pair well with Cardamom such as Black Pepper, Coriander, Fennel and Ginger.
What can I substitute for Cardamom essential oil?
  • If you do not have Cardamom on hand but want a blend to mimic that aromatic, try mixing and equal amount of Cinnamon and Ginger or Cinnamon and Clove Bud together. It wont be an exact match but will come close to give you the warmth and spicyness that Cardamom exudes in a blend. To decide which combination is suitable to your needs, hold up two bottles together to your nose and take a whiff. This will help you decide if you like the combination of Cinnamon and Ginger or if your preference lies with the union of CInnamon and Clove Bud.
Can I use Cardamom essential oil in cooking?
  • Essential oils are powerful, concentrated substances so a little goes a long way. Two of the most effective ways to use them are by way of inhalation and topical use. Ingesting Cardamom essential oil is not the optimal way to achieve its benefits as it lacks nutrients found in the whole pods. What’s more, the essential oil is often far more expensive than the pods that produce it. Therefore, we recommend using cardamom pods in cooking rather than essential oil.
