Frequently Asked Questions
What is Nutmeg essential oil?
  • Nutmeg essential oil (Myristica fragrans) is steam distilled from the nutmeg spice plant. As an aromatic medicine, it has been used throughout history to alleviate pain, uplift, reduce tension, soothe anxiety, ease muscle aches, stop insomnia and act as a sedative. Similar to the aroma when baking with Nutmeg, the essential oil has a spicy and woody fragrance. Native to Moluccas and nearby islands, Nutmeg is generally cultivated in the areas surrounding Indonesia. An evergreen tree that produces smooth bark, dense foliage and small yellow flowers, the plant’s seeds are steam distilled to extract the essential oil.
How to use Nutmeg essential oil for adrenals?
  • Issues with adrenals may present themselves in several symptoms, including chronic fatigue, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, weight loss, loss of appetite, body aches and hair loss. Nutmeg may assist with these symptoms. For example, Nutmeg can help soothe pain when diluted and applied topically. To dilute it, combine 4 drops Nutmeg and 1 oz Fractionated Coconut oil for a .6% dilution, then apply to the area of concern. Note here that Nutmeg has a maximum recommended dilution rate of .8%.
Is Nutmeg essential oil safe for dogs?
  • Animals such as dogs metabolize essential oils very differently than humans. If choosing to use Nutmeg essential oil around your dog, it’s important to look out for warning signs such as behavioral differences, such as whining, scratching or acting loopy. Stop using essential oils around your dog if you notice these signs, and don’t use essential oils around small dogs, puppies and pregnant dogs. We don’t recommend applying essential oils to your pup or administering oils orally without consulting a holistic veterinarian. You may diffuse small amounts of oil around your dog, but be sure to do so in a well-ventilated room where your dog can leave if desired.
Can Nutmeg essential oil get you high?
  • Nutmeg is said to have a psychotropic effect when taken in high amounts. Aromatherapist Robert Tisserand and colleagues took 1.5 mL of Nutmeg oil and noticed psychotropic effects [Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young, Essential Oil Safety (Second Edition. United Kingdom: Churchill Livingstone Elsevier, 2014), 366-367.]. A separate study revealed that ingesting a large amount of Nutmeg led to a negative psychotropic episode. With that said, we do not recommend casual ingestion of essential oils as they can be damaging to the mucous membrane if used incorrectly. Note here that Nutmeg essential oil does not cause these effects when used as advised.
How to make Nutmeg essential oil?
  • Nutmeg essential oil is made via steam distillation. In steam distillation, plant material is placed in a still, water is added, then heat is applied to the unit. As water heats, plants release their essential oil, the oil rises with steam droplets that are sucked into a pipe and the oil and water are then separated. While it may not be possible to make Nutmeg essential oil at home, you can make aromatic hydrosol water that contains many of the same therapeutic benefits as an essential oil.
