Frequently Asked Questions
How to make Balsam Fir essential oil?
  • Fir Balsam essential oil is made via steam distillation. In steam distillation, plant material is placed in a still, water is added, then heat is applied to the unit. As water heats, plants release their essential oil, the oil rises with steam droplets that are sucked into a pipe and the oil and water are then separated. While it may not be possible to make Fir Balsam essential oil at home, you can make aromatic hydrosol water that contains many of the same therapeutic benefits as an essential oil. Click here for instructions on how to make your own hydrosol.
How to use Balsam Fir essential oil?
  • There are several ways to effectively use Fir Balsam essential oil and obtain its benefits, including 1.) Add 10 drops to your essential oil diffuser per 100 ml of water. 2.) Add 10 drops to an Essential Oil Inhaler and take it with you for on-the-go therapeutic use. 3.) make an anti-inflammatory massage oil blend for fatigue and arthritis to give pain relief. 4.) Spray onto surfaces and in the air to refresh your space.
What does Balsam Fir essential oil smell like?
  • Balsam Fir is steam distilled from the green needles of the tree. This oil gives off sweet, fresh, evergreen and woodsy notes that emits a deep uplifting balsamic aroma that can enliven, awaken and energize a room. Its clean and top note aroma is first to give off its notes in a blend that carries vibrant notes of the forest and coniferous notes reminiscent of Christmas trees and the warmth of holidays.
Is Balsam Fir essential oil the same as White Fir?
  • Balsam Fir and White Fir (aka Silver Fir) are two different trees that have many of the same qualities. White Fir has the Latin name, Abies alba, and Balsam Fir is known as Abies balsamea in Latin - when confused about an essential oil, always look to the Latin name to be clear of the chemotype and species. Both essential oils are made from the small pointy leaves from their trees via steam distillation, They both can energize, open breathing and invite stability and empowerment. Both trees are also native to North America and Europe. Balsam fir grows to a height of up to 80 feet and White or Silver fir grows to about 30-50 feet in height.
Why does Balsam Fir essential oil give me a headache?
  • In some instances, people will have a sensitivity or an allergy to a plant. When that plant is used to make an essential oil, it may cause adverse reactions. Heachache can be one sign that the essential oil is either too stimulating or causing an allergic reaction. If you start to feel off and unwell after diffusing or smelling an essential oil, please discontinue use. Immediately open windows and doors to let fresh air in and clear a space of the aromas that may be causing you to feel bad. If needed consult a medical professional.
