Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sage essential oil safe?
  • Sage essential oil is safe when used as advised. It has a maximum recommended dilution rate of 0.4%, which equals about 2 drops of Sage in 1 oz of carrie oil. Due to its heightened safety precautions, it’s not recommended to be used by young children and pregnant or nursing persons. Sage is also not recommended to be used by those with epilepsy. Finally, while Edens Garden does not recommend oral use of essential oils, Sage may cause adverse side effects if used internally.
What is Sage essential oil good for?
  • Sage essential oil (Salvia officinalis) is a potent and powerful wellness aid. Historically, Sage has been used for hair care, digestive support and lowering the activity of sweat glands. Diffused, Sage is a respiratory support, stress aid, headache helper and fatigue reducer. When diluted and applied topically on the skin, it can reduce the appearance of cellulite. For this reason, we added Sage to our Cellulite essential oil blend.
What’s the difference between Clary Sage and Sage essential oil?
  • With an herbaceous and earthy aroma, Sage (Salvia officinalis) has been acknowledged throughout history for its medicinal properties. It makes an excellent addition to shampoo or preparations with carrier oils for sore muscles, aching stomach and cellulite and is a highly effective addition to DIY home cleaners and sprays. Due to the presence of thujone, it is not recommended to exceed a 0.4% dilution of Sage to avoid skin irritation and it’s also not recommended to be used around children or those pregnant and nursing. Clary Sage essential oil is sweet, herbaceous, clean, and likened to earl grey tea. Clary Sage oil works well when applied topically for oily skin care, stomach aches, PMS, menopause, hot flashes and cramps. It is generally considered safe for use with all healthy individuals.
Does Sage essential oil cleanse?
  • In religious practices, Sage is said to bring spiritual cleansing and positivity. Therapeutically, Sage offers cleansing properties that promote wellness. To usher in positivity, diffuse 10 drops of Sage essential oil per 100 ml of water in an essential oil diffuser. For home cleaning, combine 80 drops Sage and 1 oz 190-proof grain alcohol in a 4 oz glass spray bottle. After a few hours, add 3 oz distilled water and shake gently to combine. Spray on surfaces and in the air to refresh your space.
Is diffusing Sage essential oil the same as burning it?
  • Burning sage or smudging is a Native American practice that is said to clear negative influences and energy. The practice involves tying dried sage into tight bundles, burning the end and walking throughout a space with the burning sage extended out. Sage essential oil has mood-boosting properties that can usher in positivity when inhaled. While both practices have similar benefits, we don’t condone diffusing Sage essential oil in place of burning sage because it is considered an important cultural ritual amongst Native American. Note, that if you’re choosing to burn sage, it’s important to check if it’s been sustainably and ethically sourced. Selling illegally wild-harvested sage has been on the rise.
