Frequently Asked Questions
How to make Spruce essential oil?
  • Spruce essential oil is made via steam distillation. In steam distillation, plant material is placed in a still, water is added, then heat is applied to the unit. As water heats, plants release their essential oil, the oil rises with steam droplets that are sucked into a pipe and the oil and water are then separated. While it may not be possible to make Spruce essential oil at home, you can make aromatic hydrosol water that contains many of the same therapeutic benefits as essential oil. Click here for instructions on how to make your own hydrosol.
What’s the difference between Black Spruce and Idaho Blue Spruce essential oil?
  • There is little we’re able to gather about Idaho Blue Spruce as there is no GC/MS report (a test that reveals what is an oil and whether or not it’s pure, quality oil) available by Young Living. However, based on its description, Edens Garden’s Black Spruce is comparable to Idaho Blue Spruce essential oil. An essential oil that links the freshness of an open forest with the human experience, Spruce has a soft green and woody aroma. Its fragrance is sometimes compared to balsamic and pine. Therapeutically it helps to aid the respiratory system, soothe muscle aches and encourage energy.
What is Spruce essential oil used for?
  • Black Spruce essential oil (Picea mariana) has been used throughout history for its many healing attributes. Diffused, it assists with respiratory issues, cold & flu symptoms, allergies and congestion. Inhaled before bed, Spruce is also a helpful sleep aid. Diluted and applied topically, it alleviates pain and muscle soreness. Its earthy, pine-like aroma also makes it a worthy addition to DIYs.
Are Spruce and Hemlock the same essential oil?
  • Black Spruce and Hemlock (also known as Hemlock Spruce) refer to two different oils that share various similarities. Hemlock (Pinus canadensis) is steam distilled from the needles and twigs of the Hemlock tree. Aromatically, its similar to Spruce in that its earthy, fresh, clean and crisp. Therapeutically, both Spruce and Hemlock offer respiratory support and soothe pain and inflammation. Because of their many similarities, Black Spruce and Hemlock can both be used interchangeably.
How to use Spruce essential oil to clean house?
  • Due to its clean, crisp aroma and antimicrobial properties, Spruce makes an excellent addition to household cleaning. To create an all-purpose cleaning spray, combine 80 drops Spruce and 1 oz 190-proof grain alcohol in a 4 oz glass spray bottle. Let sit for a few hours, then add 3 oz distilled water. Spray onto surfaces, linens, in the air and around high-traffic areas to refresh your space. To deodorize and refresh the air, you can also add 10 drops Spruce per 100 ml of water in an essential oil diffuser.
