EO Mythstakes: Can You Detox With Essential Oils?
There are many claims surrounding detoxing and aromatherapy, including some you may have heard. Does skin irritation following EO application mean your body is detoxing? This is just one of the most prevalent claims circulating the natural industry today, and perhaps the most misunderstood.
Dr. Robert Pappas sets the record straight on essential oils and detoxing:
“A rash or burn from an essential oil is basically your skin screaming at you ‘hey, stop that and stop it now!’ This is why you should always do a patch test on a small area of skin and wait a while to see what happens before you… start bathing yourself in an essential oil that you have not used before.”
He adds that this myth may have originated from people looking for a positive reason to explain skin irritation caused by essential oils. Adverse reactions to the topical application of EOs most often mean that the oil is not diluted to an appropriate amount, that the oil has oxidized, or that the user has a skin sensitivity or allergy to the oil.
To prevent skin irritation, follow safe dilution guidelines, and apply a small amount of the oil to the inside of your elbow. If no reaction occurs, you may continue to use the oil at a safe dilution.
If you're new to carrier oils and dilution, you might want to try Grapeseed carrier oil.
Its natural composition is incredibly gentle on the skin as it tighten and tones.
