Our Hot Weather Guide to Natural Deodorant
Baby, it’s hot outside. And if some days you feel like you’re melting, imagine how your deodorant feels. Hot weather can affect your deodorant’s efficacy and stability, as well as your ability to wear deodorant in the first place. But it doesn’t have to. Our hot-weather guide to natural deodorant pulls out all the stops to ensure you and your deodorant don’t have to worry about the day’s weather report. Here’s how:
- Stick it in the fridge: Yep, you read that right. If the level of heat is causing your deodorant to suffer, cool it off in the fridge. When you wake up, take it out of the fridge — allowing it to warm up — and apply before you walk out the door. You may also need to hold it on your underarms for a while longer before it glides.
- Don’t sweat it: Unless you’re really lucky (or have hypohidrosis), you most likely sweat when hot weather rolls around. Applying your deodorant to dry underarms is critical to your deodorant’s efficacy. In other words, this is a reminder to dry your pits before applying your deo.
- It doesn’t hurt to reapply: Some of us need more than one swipe to get us through the day, and that’s okay. This is especially true when the weather is blazing. Just be sure those ‘pits are dry before you reapply.
- Don’t have a meltdown: You wouldn’t leave an animal in a hot car. Likewise, don’t leave your deodorant in your car when the sun is beating down. Your poor deodorant will perish, and probably melt all over your glove compartment or cup holder.
- Bring out the heavy hitters: If you find that your deodorant is melting, turning on your air conditioner can save the day. You and your deodorant will probably be better for it
- Ice, ice, baby: Similar to our tip about sticking your deo in the fridge, if you’re going camping or bringing your deodorant along on an outdoor adventure, keep it in your cooler throughout the day. You may want to put it in a plastic bag first, you know, in case someone gets weirded out by the deodorant sitting on top of the eggs.
- Open-door policy: If you keep your deodorant in your bathroom, like most people, leave your bathroom fan on and keep the doors or windows open to increase air circulation, rather than allowing hot air to stay trapped inside.
- Let your skin breathe: Wearing the right clothes can make a real difference when it comes to minimizing sweat during these hot summer months. Breathable, breezy fabrics like cotton can keep your skin cool and increase airflow to your underarms.
- Say no to B.O.: If the weather is really humid, shower twice a day and apply a fresh coat of deodorant to dry skin after your cold shower. This will keep your pits dry and fresh-smelling, so you won’t have to deal with body odor.
- Apply at night, too: Last but not least, to get the most out of your natural deodorant, apply right before bed. Because you sweat less at night, it means your underarm skin has the best opportunity to entirely absorb the formula. Plus, you wake up smelling fresh. It’s a win, win for everyone!
