Essential oils can be an amazing part of your self-care, relaxation, beauty regimen, and daily cleaning. Natural essential oils can replace so many everyday harsh, synthetic products. But be sure to learn about the oils before you use them. Each oil has unique properties, and just like medications, you want to be safe about how you apply them. Below we’ll cover how to safely use essential oils topically on your skin or in the air, as well as precautions to take with children and pets.
Our blog is filled with fun ways to use essential oils on the skin (topically). From DIY acne spot treatments to homemade facial masks. Before you dive in, consider that essential oils are powerful substances that should be used with caution. Always read labels before using. On our labels, we’ll tell you if an essential oil is safe for pregnant women or children over a certain age. Some essential oils can also make you sensitive to sunlight, which could make you prone to sunburns when you’re outside.
Dilution is an integral step in using essential oils both safely and effectively, because it prevents the user from overexposure.
To dilute essential oil, choose a carrier oil and dilution rate that fits your need. A carrier oil is an oil made up of fatty acids, and is non-volatile. Olive oil, Grapeseed oil and Sesame oil are all examples of carriers.
The first step to diluting is figuring out which dilution rate fits your need. Then download our dilution chart to see the ratio of essential oil drops to carrier oil.
Dilution % for Safe Topical Use on Skin
1% | Children 2+, pregnant women, and for face or scalp use |
2-3% | General topical use, such as in a massage or in a lotion, for localized issues and injuries |
4-10% | Spot treatment in roll-ons, aches, respiratory congestion and other temporary issues |

There are many methods and devices out there to “diffuse” essential oils — meaning, to release the essential oil molecules into the air. By diffusing essential oils into the air around you, you can breathe in the therapeutic properties and get the aromatic benefit. And it just makes the area you’re in smell divine. When it comes to how you diffuse oils, you have a few options
Evaporative Diffusers
You don’t have to have a high tech diffuser to get the benefit of essential oils. There are plenty of non-electrical diffusers that suit the need and are less conspicuous. Our Reed Diffusers and Ceramic Bloom Diffusers are beautiful and eco-friendly. A simple reed or wick dips into the essential oil, absorbing it and allowing it to travel up and into the air. We also carry small Personal Diffusers and Jewelry Diffusers (oh yes) that act in the same way.

Electric Diffusers
Nebulizing Diffusers and Ultrasonic Diffusers are the most common electric diffusers. Both generates aromatic essential oil vapor without using any heat. Why does this matter? Because it preserves the therapeutic qualities of the essential oils you put into it. Plus, they usually have fun bells and whistles to elevate your experience: a built-in light to set a calming mood, and intermittent misting settings.

Tip on Essential Oil Safety with Pets
Avoid diffusing essential oils around your furry friends (and don’t use on their skin directly). Dogs and cats have a unique physiology, and cannot metabolize most essential oils like we can.
It doesn’t hurt to repeat it — essential oils should be treated like medications. Read labels carefully to ensure an oil is safe for your child. Some oils are specifically harmful for children under 2. Kids also need a less potent dilution when using essential oils. To help you take the guesswork out of essential oils with your children, we’ve developed our OK for Kids line.
OK for Kids Essential Oils
OK For Kids is a collection of 18 synergy blends that only include essential oils that are safe for children 2+. Expertly formulated by aromatherapist, Sylla Sheppard-Hanger and essential oil chemist, Dr. Robert Pappas, each blend ( like the super popular Sleepy Head and Healthy Hero) addresses the most common needs of parents and children.
This is a popular and much-debated topic in aromatherapy. At Edens Garden, we do not recommend the internal use of essential oils without consulting with your medical doctor and an experienced aromatherapist, and here’s why. Undiluted, pure essential oils are highly concentrated substances. For example, 250 pounds of steam distilled Lavender may yield 1 pound of Lavender essential oil. If you convert this number down to a drop, you will find that there is about ⅓ oz of Lavender per drop of Lavender EO. Thus, adding 3 drops of Lavender EO to a cup of water equates to adding one ounce of Lavender plant. When added to a drink or swallowed directly, essential oils come into straight contact with vital organs such as the tongue, mouth, esophagus, stomach, etc. Because essential oils are miscible with fats, they attach to the mucous membrane which lines these organs leading to irritation and possible damage.
