It is often used as an analgesic and antispasmodic topically on sore muscles, pains and aches.
- Edens Garden does not recommend using Peppermint (Mentha piperita) around cats due to negative side effects - cats generally cringe and walk away from strong aromas (unless there is fish involved.) However, there is a lot of conflicting information on the web about cats and essential oils. A lot of it is outdated and based on very, very old medical research. If you would like to read more on essential oils and a cat's metabolism regarding essential oils, please refer to this article written by a Veterinary doctor who is also an aromatic medical practitioner. The vet says that cats are able to metabolize essential oils adding that “they will not build up over time, although cats can have what we refer to as a different half-life for a chemical, or elimination time” - which includes drugs cats receive from their veterinarian for any procedures or medical issues.
- Peppermint essential oil roll-on is easy to use for many issues including aches, pains, muscle spasm, respiratory issues and even for itchiness. Try it these ways: 1.) Roll the oil onto an achy neck or other muscle aches, massage in gently and apply heat to help your skin absorb the oil and improve circulation. 2.) Massage the oil over your breastbone to make breathing easier and break up congestion. 3.) Use as spot treatment on bug bites. 4.) Roll it onto the nape of the neck and pulse points of the temples, wrists and neck to help relieve a stubborn headache and increase cephalic circulation as well as for mental clarity. We highly recommend performing a skin patch test on the inner arm when using a new essential oil topically.
- It is not recommended that you use essential oils in the first trimester, considered the most delicate time in pregnancy. - Due to the menthol, menthone and 1,8 cineole content of Peppermint, it is not wise to use Peppermint around any children under the age of 10 due to the fact that Peppermint has been shown to cause breathing and neurological problems in young children, especially for those with asthma. Other essential oils rich in a natural component called 1,8- cineole, such as Eucalyptus, Ravintsara and Cajeput, along with Peppermint should be avoided altogether in children younger than 10 years old.
