Sandalwood essential oil exudes one of the world’s most famous aromas and is a favorite for many religious, spiritual and personal rituals. Its distinctive aroma is reminiscent of antique wood, rich leather and very complex, warm notes suggesting earth, herbs and a regal stability.
Sandalwood is often the base oil in well-known colognes, perfumes and body care products. Exceptionally precious Hawaiian Sandalwood is best used conservatively in simple diffusion or mixed in a carrier oil. Its subtle, yet sweet, rich and woodsy aroma blends well with flowery Jasmine, Orange and similar oils to balance its heavier presence.
The legendary Sandalwood species of trees are all aromatic. They are found in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Australia and Hawaii and other Pacific Islands. They all share similar chemistry and can be used interchangeably, depending on your specific preference for their very subtle aromatic characterizations.
Hawaiian Sandalwood is called 'ili-ahi’ in Hawaiian and was considered a sacred, ceremonial plant used, secured and traded by Hawaiian royalty. It grows at higher elevations on the Big Island.

- In perfumery, scents have ‘notes.’ A scent can be a top, middle or base note. Sandalwood is considered a base note. Each aroma note reacts differently based on its volatility. Top notes tend to be the most volatile, meaning they don’t last that long after they’ve been exposed to air. However, top notes are generally the strongest aroma when you first smell a scent. On the other hand, base notes are the least volatile, meaning they last much longer and are not the strongest aroma when you first experience a scent but they grow stronger after being exposed to air.
- Sandalwood essential oil is safe to use while pregnant when following proper safety guidelines. It is not recommended that you use essential oils in the first trimester, which is considered the most delicate time in pregnancy. It is recommended that you do not use essential oils frequently, but rather minimally. Dilute your essential oil to 1% during topical application that you don’t overwhelm your system. Lastly, if you’re having complications, it may be best to avoid essential oils.
- Essential oils are powerful, concentrated substances so a little goes a long way. Two of the most effective ways to use them are by way of inhalation and topical use. Using Sandalwood essential oil internally is rarely necessary or recommended, no matter the brand. Essential oil ingestion can lead to adverse reactions such as medication contraindications, mucous membrane irritation, sensitization and nausea if done incorrectly. Therefore, if you wish to drink essential oils, we strongly recommend consulting with a knowledgeable professional with experience in internal use.
- Essential oils, including Sandalwood, have not been shown to lighten skin. However, they do offer numerous skin-nourishing benefits and can help reduce the appearance of dark spots and discoloration through collagen generation. When skin problems arise, dilute this oil to 1-3% and apply to the skin. Use twice daily as needed. Additionally, like most oils belonging to the sesquiterpenols family, Sandalwood is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to heal and moisturize skin.
- There are several ways to effectively use Sandalwood essential oil and obtain its benefits, including 1.) Add 10 drops to your essential oil diffuser per 100 ml of water. 2.) Dilute 12 drops per 1 ounce of carrier oil and use in a skin-nourishing massage. 3.) Add 6 drops to 1 ounce of castille soap and 1 cup of Epsom salt for added magnesium absorption.. Add the mixture to your bath and soak up the goodness. 4.) Add 10 drops to an Essential Oil Inhaler and take it with you for on-the-go therapeutic use.
