What a wild ride! As I reflect on the past 9 years I am reminded of one of my favorite family traditions. Every Christmas my mother in law sends out a “year in review” letter along with our family photo and every year I am excited to open it. It gives me time to sit back and appreciate the family I have been blessed to be a part of. I feel the same way about our EG family, and today I get to share some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way. So here it goes.
Every person and job is as valuable as the other. Every job is as important, each person doing their part to make the whole company function well together. We have the most amazing, hard-working, loyal, dedicated, smart, joyful staff EVER! I am extremely grateful.
We began with the same values we hold today. Not compromising on quality. Offering the best at reasonable prices. Being transparent. Helping guide with education. Making safety important. Giving. Listening to our amazing customers. Never taking a short cut. I promise we will NEVER compromise. We will always strive to achieve the absolute best in all that we do. I don’t see us doing things any other way- it just isn’t worth it.
I absolutely believe it is a blessing to give. Life is so short, isn’t it? I wish someone could bottle up the feeling you get when you give someone a crocheted blanket you have been working on for 3 months; or quietly paying for a families tab at a restaurant just for the fun of it; or sponsoring a young boy for a rehab program who has his entire life ahead of him. It is about offering a touch of humanity, no matter how big or small. People have helped me so much along my life’s journey, funding multiple missions trips that helped shape me as a person and my world view. For the gift that EG has been to me and my family, my hope is that it has been a blessing beyond measure to many more, in this short life we have on earth.
I like a lot of open air. We intentionally have no walls at our headquarters. No position is more or less respected with a corner office. We can see and hear everything everyone does. It is good when there is nothing to hide- that is true freedom and transparency. I have the same values with the products we offer. We offer GC/MS testing reports on every lot of essential oil that comes through our doors. We want to offer products that have amazing ingredients that you won’t ever have to question. Transparency leads to trust and trust is of the utmost importance.
The essential oil community is made up of the most incredible people. From formulators and chemists to seasoned aromatherapists and safety experts, we’ve had the honor of working hand in hand with industry pioneers. How did we get so blessed? I believe they have helped because they care about the industry fiercely. Passion has no price, and to work endlessly towards a goal is a goal worthy of having.
The essential oil industry unifies the world. There is a reason why every essential oil cannot grow in the United States. Each country has its unique soil, climate, sun, moisture, water etc that allows it to thrive and grow. We all need each other and that brings us together in such a beautiful, simple way.
We never set out with the intention of being an all-woman operated company, it just sort of happened. Perhaps it was growing up with a single mother and three sisters. I like the way that women get things done. We have a mission in mind and there is nothing that can be done to stop us. We have amazing opinions that we are not afraid to voice. We work really hard, with passion and intention towards the end goal. We can organize and give order to all things. We are amazing and that is something to be applauded.
Little did I know that 2 years after starting Edens Garden my husband and I would be given a baby boy named Elijah. Then a girl, Eve, 6 weeks later. Then another baby boy, Isaac, 1.5 years later and in 8 months another boy, Zeke. When it rains it pours. I laugh because at one point every year we have 4 consecutive years covered… 4, 5, 6 and 7 year olds. It was a bit of the same road for Edens Garden and the essential oil industry in general. In the span of a few years, millions of people were reached with the good news of essential oils. Although I don’t completely align with some safety practices taught by multi-level marketing companies, I am forever thankful for them. We have forged our own road over the years, encountering rain and sunshine. Has the rain been a bit much at times? Yes, I’ve wanted to cover myself in a dry blanket and hide from all the world at times. But the rain is pretty nice when you just put your head back, let it hit your face with your eyes closed and take a deep breath. How refreshing and life giving it is.
There is a lot that happens behind the scenes. The perfumes, for instance, were a year in the making. An entire year. They were the motivation behind the Lavender Magnolia, Vanilla Sandalwood and Rose Bergamot custom blends. They started with just a base of essential oils mixed together. We tweak, we edit, change a little, maybe don’t change at all. Each blend is different and has its own story of inception. They became ingrained in our EG family. Then we start finding packaging, pulling samples to weigh pros and cons. How do we envision the final product, how does it mix in with the rest of our products? The details would bore you, but the main point being that the passion for the end product is still there and I don’t ever see that going away.
I love building a brand and not just selling a product. Even with tremendous growth, we are still a family owned and operated company. We aren’t going anywhere. We have passion for all things Edens Garden. Not only do we take it very seriously but we have fun doing it!
Withoutyou there isn’t anus (corny, I know). I can’t begin to thank our loyal, dedicated customers enough, many of whom have been by our side since this journey began. You, our faithful customers, are as much apart of the EG family as our staff members. We cannot overstate our appreciation for you all, and promise to continue our work in delivering you the very best, because you absolutely deserve it. Cheers!
