Frequently Asked Questions
What is Fennel essential oil good for?
  • Fennel, Foeniculum vulgare, contains the component trans-Anathole which is an ether that is well known for its medicinal use as a digestive aid to reduce gas, constipation, bloating and intestinal spasm as well as for its effect for PMS and menstrual cramps and other issues. It combines very well in abdominal massage to blend with Sweet Orange, Peppermint and Ginger. Mentally, it can offer stimulation, focus and clarity which when used in mediation blends can help you open your mind and let go during yoga practice.
Can you ingest Fennel essential oil?
  • Essential oils are powerful, concentrated substances so a little goes a long way. Two of the most effective ways to use them is by way of inhalation and topical use. Ingesting Fennel essential oil is rarely necessary or recommended, no matter the brand. Ingestion can lead to adverse reactions such as medication contraindications, mucous membrane irritation, sensitization and nausea if done incorrectly. Therefore, if you wish to take essential oils internally, we strongly recommend consulting with a knowledgeable professional with experience in internal use.
How to use Fennel essential oil for milk production?
  • Using Fennel for breast milk production dates back centuries but in this case it was most likely in the form of food or tea. Fennel has natural estrogen like properties that is believed to enhance breast milk. Two small studies found that using fennel helped to increase milk volume, fat content and infant weight gain. However, excessive use of fennel even as a tea can potentially cause allergic reactions and it is not recommended for use on or around babies. Babies and children under the age of two have a heightened sensitivity to odors and especially to essential oils. Misusing essential oils around babies can have a negative effect on them and we highly recommend caution with this oil.
How to use Fennel essential oil for weight loss?
  • Fennel can help fluid balance in the body and reduce fluid retention. In inhalation blends, its sweet disposition may be able to help support weight loss but more information and studies are needed to confirm these possibilities. But reducing fluid retention is a plus for weight loss. To further support your body with weight loss, make sure to eat well and exercise, walk and move everyday to improve the bodies natural rhythm and circulation.
Who shouldn’t use Fennel essential oil?
  • Fennel has been known to cause adverse reactions due to its trans-anathole content. If you have an allergy to Fennel or if you have had breast cancer, ovarian or uterine cancer in the past or are at risk for now or in the past, we advise you to avoid the use of Fennel essential oil as it can mimic the hormone estrogen. Also if you have a history of endometriosis or uterine fibroids it is also recommended that you restrain from using this oil. According to WebMD, “any condition that might be made worse by estrogen, do not use fennel.”
