Frequently Asked Questions
Is Balsam Peru essential oil a resin?
  • Peru Balsam is a type of gum resin or sap that is formed and exuded from the Peru Balsam tree which is found in El Salvador. Like Vanilla, the resin is steam distilled to make an oleoresin and not a true essential oil. Oleoresin essential oils do not dissolve into oils or water and when added to carrier oils, it will sink to the bottom of the container. To infuse Peru Balsam into a carrier oil, shake the container and let it sit for a few weeks and shake well before using this delicately aromatic oil blend.
What does Peru Balsam essential oil do?
  • Peru Balsam is a warming and slightly stimulating oleoresin. Traditionally used in South America for a number of reasons it is best known for its relief of skin problems, as respiratory support for bronchitis and for nervous tension. Try it to help slow healing wounds like ulcers and hemorrhoids and bed sores. As an anti-inflammatory, it's excellent for itchy skin issues such as eczema.
Can you have an allergic reaction to Balsam of Peru?
  • It is always wise to skin patch test essential oils you have never used before and wait 24 hours. Peru Balsam is no exception. If you have a skin reaction that includes redness, soreness, itchiness, swelling or blisters you have an allergy to that particular oil. That being said, Peru Balsam can be a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis to about 4% of the population.
What does Peru Balsam essential oil smell like?
  • This base note has a soft balsamic-like scent that is sweet, and slightly bitter and carries woody, subtle undertones of vanilla and cinnamon. Peru balsam oil has a very thick molasses-like consistency. It's often been used by the perfume industry as a fixative to extend the life of perfume and cologne.
What are some diffuser blend recipe ideas for Peru Balsam?
  • Open your heart and ease emotional health with a blend of 3 drops of Peru Balsam, 1 drops of Neroli and 2 drops of Sweet Orange essential oils added to your home diffuser. If you or loved ones have issues with Respiratory health, blend 2 drops of Peru Balsam with 2 drops of Eucalyptus globulus and 2 drops of Spike Lavender essential oils. And for Immune Support add to your diffuser this blend: 2 drops Ravintsara, 2 drops Peru Balsam and 1 drop of Lemon essential oils.

Wonderful

I don’t know why, but as long as I’ve been involved with essential oils, I’ve never bought this oil. What a suprise! I was expecting a strong evergreen smell, but this isn’t like that. It’s mild and sweet. I can see why it would blend well with vanilla because it reminded me of vanilla when I first smelled it. It’sa really nice oil to diffuse!

Interesting Balsam

As other reviewers have noted, there is indeed a noticeable vanilla-like sweetness to this Peru balsam. If you have ever smelled Copaiba balsam, that is the other scent intertwined with the vanilla-like notes. It is not an oil, IMO, that you would necessarily use in a "Forest"/"Mountain"/"Yuletide" blend with the more recognizable Douglas fir, spruce, or juniper oils (although there is a hint of Christmas cookie going on). Intriguing. Warm.

Warm and sweet

This is a sweet woodsy base note. I love this when I want something warm and cozy. It goes well with vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, anything spicy. It's a thick oil but I'm able to get it out of the bottle without any trouble. It's a great addition

Amazing

It is truly hard to pick a favorite but this one is definitely at the top. It blends with so many others or smells lush on its own.
