Ingredients in Handmade Soap

What Are The Ingredients In Our Natural Bar Soap?

People are unknowingly exposed to hundreds of chemicals a day- some harmless and some not so harmless. A more severe issue is when these harmful chemicals wind up in products we use in and on our bodies.

At Edens Garden, we’ve sought to do our part in minimizing this problem by creating a bar soap made with 100% clean, naturally derived ingredients free of synthetics and harmful chemicals. To help you understand what exactly is in our natural bar soaps, EG experts have broken down what you need to know about each and every ingredient in our soaps.

Saponification

Each bar of soap contains saponified, cold-pressed carrier oils of Olive oil, Coconut oil, and sustainable Palm oil. Saponification is the process of turning carrier oils into cleansing soaps. Once saponified, these soaps have the ability to pick up oils and dirt from skin and wash them away in water, while also conditioning the skin with the oil’s emollient-rich properties.

Olive oil

Cold pressed from olive pits, olive oil is high in oleic acid. Olive oil is known for being easily absorbed, mimicking sebum, promoting skin regeneration and is preferred for dry, sensitive skin types making it popular in skincare. The only reason we at EG don’t offer this wonder oil is because it's so widely available.

Coconut oil

High in lauric acid, Coconut oil is incredibly skin softening, moisturizing and helps to replenish damaged skin. What Coconut oil may be most useful for is its ability to help combat a multitude of skincare issues such as eczema, psoriasis, and inflammation. We felt we had no choice to include this oil in our bar soaps as it is one of the best all-around carrier oils, period.

Palm oil

Containing high amounts of oleic acid, sustainably sourced Palm oil is known for its antioxidant, emollient-rich properties. No need to fear, the palm oil in our bar soaps is sourced from farms committed to sustainability and not the deforestation of rainforests. To learn more about sustainable palm oil, visitRoundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil’s website.

Soybean oil

With its high linoleic acid content, soybean oil helps reducetransepidermal water loss (TEWL), keeping skin moisturized, preventing dryness, promoting skin healing and helping to combat eczema, psoriasis, and inflammation. With the latest research in the industry showing that soy is ahuge benefit to one’s health, cold-pressed soybean oil is a great addition to our natural bar soaps.

Herbs, clays, and spices

Each soap may contain a proprietary blend of organic herbs, clays or spices to add natural color and texture. Our Charcoal Bar also contains activated charcoal (as a given), which picks up and removes toxins and other impurities from the skin.

More ingredients to love

Along with the cold pressed oils listed above, each bar soap contains purified water and Edens Garden’s 100% pure essential oils. Our bar soaps only contain ingredients derived from nature, and never synthetic or harmful chemicals, so you can feel good about using this soap day, night or anytime you need a quick cleanse. Each soap is gentle enough to be used on all skin types and as a facial cleanser, with the exception of the Peppermint bar which may be irritating to those with sensitive skin.

We at Edens Garden chose only the cleanest, most natural and sustainable ingredients for our bar soaps as we are committed to providing the highest quality products to our loyal customers. We hope you enjoy!

I’d love to try your soaps but can’t because of the soybean oil. Would you consider making one or two bars that dont contain that ingredient?

Hi Ellen! We have chosen not to hide this fact. In our blog post from yesterday "What Does “Cold-Process” Soap Really Mean?" we write that sodium hydroxide is needed for saponification. There are different trains of thought when it comes to writing ingredients on a label, and because saponification inherently means sodium hydroxide was used, and because none remains after saponification, we’ve chosen to list the saponified oils used only.

Hi Marie! Yes, all of our natural bar soaps are cold processed.

This sounds really great, I have no problems at all with these ingredients you list. However, you left out one very important ingredient – sodium hydroxide. Soap simply cannot be made without a caustic substance – that’s what saponification is all about.

I wish companies would just be honest about their ingredients. It’s sad because if the ingredients you list are accurate, there was really no need to mislead everyone by statements such as “saponified olive oil” Saponification using a substance such as lye is how soap has been made for hundreds of years now – why hide that fact??

Are these cold process soaps?
