Although historical records don’t account for the exact moment Lavender’s many uses were discovered, it’s believed to have been cultivated in Arabia around 600 B.C. Lavender’s native range now extends across the Canary Islands, North and East Africa, Southern Europe and the Mediterranean and into certain regions of the Middle East and India.

Edens Garden’s Lavender plants are grown at high elevation and are also referred to as Bulgarian Lavender. The highest quality Lavender grows at altitudes above 2,000 feet. Lavender is an evergreen plant that grows to about 3 feet and produces gorgeous lilac-colored flowers. What is Lavender essential oil used for?

  • Lavender essential oil is known as the “Mother of Essential Oils” for being one of the most versatile tools in aromatherapy. Most often, Lavender oil is used to promote sleep, allowing the user to fall asleep, stay asleep and wake feeling well rested. In skincare, it can assist with blemishes, irritation, redness and a skin condition called eczema. Its soothing aroma also makes it a great natural stress reliever. What’s more, Lavender is great in massage oil as well as for hair growth, headaches and even insect bite. 

Does Lavender oil repel bugs?

  • Lavender oil works in synergy alongside other repellent essential oils. For example, studies have shown Nootka Tree, Catnip and Peppermint oil have an affinity for repelling insects. With Lavender oil added to the mix, these essential oils can also protect and nourish the skin. What’s more, Lavender oil is a great remedy for soothing insect bites. To use Lavender oil for repelling bugs, add 3 drops of Lavender to 9 drops of Pesty Defy or Repel blend. Dilute in 2 tablespoons of Neem oil and apply topically when outdoors.

Can you apply Lavender oil directly to the skin?

  • Because essential oils are 100% pure and undiluted, only a little is needed to be effective. To use Lavender oil on your skin, we recommend first diluting it in a high-quality carrier oil such as Fractionated Coconut oil. For facial use, dilute Lavender oil to 1% by combining 2 tablespoons of carrier oil with 6 drops of Lavender oil. Lavender massage oil can be diluted to 3% by combining 2 tablespoons of carrier oil with 18 drops of Lavender oil. Using undiluted essential oils topically can cause skin irritation and for this reason, we always recommend diluting your essential oil for dermal use. 

What is the best way to use Lavender essential oil?

  • There are several ways to use Lavender oil. These include 1.) Diluting Lavender oil to 3% for topical use by combining 18 drops of Lavender oil with 2 tablespoons of carrier oil. Apply this mixture to bug bites, blemishes, inflammation, minor burns, scrapes and more. 2.) Adding 10 drops of Lavender oil per every 100 ml of water in your essential oil diffuser. Diffuse to promote sleep, alleviate headaches and reduce stress. 3.) Combine 6 drops of Lavender oil with 2 tablespoons of carrier oil and 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt. Add the mixture to your bath to help with inflammation, sleep problems, skincare and to unwind. 

What are the most common uses for lavender?

  • Due to Lavender’s versatility, it has several common uses. Some of the most common are 1.) Promoting sleep when diffused. 2.) Enhancing the appearance of skin when diluted and applied topically. 3.) Reducing stress and anxiety when diffused. 4.) Alleviating inflammation 5.) Soothing headaches. 6.) Healing insect bites. 7.) Reducing the appearance of hair loss. 

Where do you put Lavender oil for sleep?

  • The best way to use Lavender oil for sleep is by diffusing it 30 minutes before bedtime, but you can also apply it topically. To do so, dilute Lavender oil to 3% by combining 18 drops of Lavender oil and 2 tablespoons of carrier oil. Then, apply your Lavender oil mixture to pulse points such as the temples, neck, behind the ears and wrists. Alternatively, try Lavender essential oil roll-on which is prediluted and ready to be used for topical use. 

What bugs do lavender attract? Do cockroaches like Lavender?

  • Cockroaches do not like Lavender oil – in fact, Lavender oil may repel them. Studies have shown that certain essential oils repel cockroaches, such as Rosemary, Oregano, Yarrow, Eucalyptus and Peppermint oil. Lavender oil contains similar natural constituents to these essential oils and therefore may also be able to repel cockroaches, especially when paired with other repellent oils such as these. Try combining 10 drops Lavender, 10 drops Oregano and 10 drops Rosemary- Moroccan with 2 tablespoons of grain alcohol in a 2 oz glass spray bottle. After a few hours, add 2 tablespoons of distilled water and shake to combine. Spray around doors, underneath furniture and appliances or wherever cockroaches have been spotted. 

Is Lavender toxic to dogs?

  • Lavender oil is not toxic to dogs if following proper essential oil safety guidelines. For example, do not apply essential oils topically to your dog unless advised by an animal aromatherapist. Only diffuse in a large room where your dog is able to leave if desired and ensure that there is adequate ventilation. If you notice any adverse reaction, discontinue the use of Lavender oil around your dog. Lastly, don’t use Lavender oil around puppies, pregnant dogs or dogs with health conditions unless you’ve consulted with an animal aromatherapist. 

What is the difference between Lavender oil and Lavender essential oil?

  • Lavender oil and Lavender essential oil are synonymous. In aromatherapy, Lavender oil or Lavender essential oil is the product of lavender flowers being steam distilled to produce a concentrated oil.  Lavender essential oil is used for a variety of purposes such as promoting sleep, reducing stress, boosting skincare and creating an aromatic atmosphere. To ensure you are purchasing a true Lavender essential oil, there are a few things you can do. Check that the botanical name is included on the bottle (Lavandula angustifolia), confirm with the manufacturer that the oil is 100% pure and undiluted and also that they have a GC/MS report available on the oil to further verify its contents and purity.

Is Lavender oil good for wrinkles?

  • Lavender essential oil offers a wide range of benefits to the skin, including reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. To use Lavender for wrinkles, we suggest creating a combination of 6 drops of Lavender oil and 2 tablespoons of a skin nourishing carrier oil such as Rosehip. Apply your oil serum to your face day and night as the last step in your skincare routine or prior to applying sunblock. Alternatively, use an essential oil blend for mature skin such as Age Defy which includes Lavender oil along with other essentials for wrinkles. 

Is Lavender oil good for anxiety?

  • Lavender oil is a great option for alleviating feelings of anxiety and nervous tension. In 2017, researchers studied the effects of aromatherapy on women undergoing breast biopsy. They found that women who received aromatherapy with Lavender essential oil had a statistically significant reduction in anxiousness. A similar study found that Lavender aromatherapy helped reduce anxiety in surgery patients prior to their operations. To use Lavender oil for anxiety, add 10-15 drops to an Essential Oil Inhaler and inhale while taking deep breaths as needed.

Does Lavender make you sleepy?

  • Lavender essential oil does offer sedative effects which can induce sleepiness – especially when preparing for bedtime. Along with diffusing Lavender oil 30 minutes before bed, we also like to use DIY Lavender bath bombs. To make a bath bomb, combine 20 drops of Lavender and 40 ml of Carrier Oil. Then stir in 1 cup Baking Soda and 1/2 cup Citric Acid before transferring your mixture to a silicone bath bomb mold. Let dry overnight before using in your bath. Alternatively, use Chamomile Lavender room spray as a pillow or linen spray at bedtime. 

What does Lavender do to your body?

  • Lavender oil benefits the body in a number of ways. When inhaled, it has the ability to promote sleep, alleviate headaches, reduce stress and calm both mind and body. Applying Lavender essential oil topically can reduce inflammation, boost the appearance of skin as well as soothe bug bites, minor burns and scrapes. Essential oils work by entering the bloodstream and affecting different physiological processes throughout the body. For example, when essential oils are inhaled, their aromas are processed in the olfactory bulb which is connected to the limbic system which influences memory and emotions. 

Is Lavender toxic to humans?

  • Lavender essential oil is non-toxic to humans. However, this does not mean that Lavender isn’t capable of being harmful when used improperly. For example, due to its concentrated nature, a little Lavender oil goes a long way. For this reason, we recommend diluting Lavender oil prior to topical use. If using Lavender oil in an essential oil diffuser, we suggest only using about 10 drops per every 100 ml of water. Furthermore, when diffusing ensure that there is adequate ventilation. 

What essential oils should you avoid?

  • Most commercial essential oils are safe to use when following proper safety guidelines, and don’t need to be avoided. However, there are certain situations in which certain essential oils should be avoided. For example, Cassia, Cinnamon Bark and Fennel should be avoided if pregnant and nursing. Birch and Wintergreen are contraindicated by those taking anticoagulant medications. Eucalyptus and Peppermint should be avoided by children under two years old. For these reasons, we always recommend familiarizing yourself with the safety of an essential oil prior to its use. 

Where do I apply Lavender essential oil?

  • Lavender essential oil can be applied topically for a variety of purposes. For headaches, sleep and stress, apply Lavender oil where you can best inhale it such as the temples, neck and behind the ears. Furthermore, Lavender oil can be applied to areas of inflammation, bug bites and minor burns and scrapes. Lastly, Lavender oil can be used on the face to nourish and protect the skin when diluted to 1%. Always dilute Lavender oil prior to topical use or try Lavender essential oil roll-on which is prediluted and ready to be used for topical use. 

Which essential oils should not be mixed?

  • There are plenty of chemicals you shouldn’t mix (bleach and ammonia, for example), so is it possible to create a harmful combination by mixing two otherwise harmless essential oils? Luckily, the answer is no – there are no two harmless essential oils that become harmful when combined. This doesn’t mean that essential oils are without safety considerations. For example, some essential oils have recommended dilution rates to prevent sensitization, phototoxic warnings or should be avoided when taking certain medications. They are not made more dangerous when combined with other essential oils, but their safety concerns should always be considered when blending essential oils.

SPORTS MASSAGE: Add to a 2 ounce squeeze bottle: 8 drops of Lavender (Bulgarian), 5 drops of Helichrysum, 2 drops of Peppermint and 5 drops of Copaiba, then fill with Jojoba oil and shake to mix well. Massage into sore muscles. (1.7% dilution)

SKIN RELIEF: Add to a 2 ounce squeeze bottle: 10 drops of Lavender (Bulgarian), 4 drops of Helichrysum, 5 drops of Chamomile (Roman) and 1 drop of Peppermint. Add 1/2 tablespoon of Jojoba oil and fill with aloe vera. Shake to mix well. Apply to irritated areas to soothe conditions such as bites and burns. Re-apply 2-3 times a day or as needed. Shelf life: 1 week (1.7% dilution)

CHEER: Add to a personal inhaler and inhale as needed: 5 drops of Lavender (Bulgarian), 5 drops of Orange and 5 drops of Clary Sage. Or add 5-6 drops of Lavender (Bulgarian) to your diffuser and diffuse for 30-60 minutes.

MENTAL FATIGUE: Add to a personal inhaler and inhale as needed: 5 drops of Lavender (Bulgarian), 5 drops of Rosemary and 5 drops of Mandarin.

DRY, MATURE SKIN: Add to a 2 ounce bottle: 4 drops of Lavender (Bulgarian), 1 drop of Carrot Seed, 4 drops of Frankincense (Frereana) and 3 drops of Helichrysum; fill with Jojoba oil. Apply to face, throat and the back of hands. (1% dilution)

BODY MIST: To a 4 ounce spray bottle add: 20 drops of Lavender (Bulgarian), 10 drops of Geranium, 5 drops of Ylang Ylang and 5 drops of Orange, then fill with witch hazel and Polysorbate 20 (manufacturer's recommended amount). Shake well before spritzing on skin as desired. Shelf life: 1 week (1.7% dilution)
