Frequently Asked Questions
How to use Grapefruit essential oil for weight loss?
  • As a topical treatment, some studies have been conducted with rats as the test subject and were promising in the face of weight loss and metabolism. However, further human studies are needed to verify that the findings are accurate. One small human study is promising and tested a massage oil that contained 3% blend of Grapefruit, Cypress and three other oils in Grapeseed oil. The subjects received a massage once a week with the blend and massaged themselves 2 times daily. It did show promising results with a decrease in abdominal fat but also a reduction in waist circumference but, since the massage oil contained 5 essential oils, it can't be pinned down exactly that Grapefruit works alone to decrease appetite and reduce fat. It is also possible that Grapefruit can reduce cravings and hunger and suppress and overactive appetite aiding weight management.

How to use Grapefruit essential oil?
  • Grapefruit, known by its Latin name, Citrus paradisi, is a lovely citrus oil with sharp, fresh aromatics. It blends incredibly well with other oils to improve mood and uplift the spirit. We love it blended into a carrier oil for massaging into the abdomen to aid the liver and potentially reduce abdominal fat. Used in a room diffuser, not only can it rid a space of unwanted odors, this oil can heighten spirit and bring on a sunshiny smile by reducing stress, tension and anxiety. One word of caution is that Grapefruit is a phototoxic oil and if used on the skin, it is wise to stay out of direct sunlight for 18 hours. To be safe and avoid phototoxicity, Grapefruit should be used at a maximum of 1% dilution in topical skin blends - that's 5-6 drops in 1 oz of carrier oil. Read more about using phototoxic oils in this blogpost.
Can you diffuse Grapefruit essential oil around dogs?
  • Animals, including dogs, metabolize essential oils differently than humans. Certain essential oils are not safe for use around dogs because they’ve been shown to produce negative side effects. If you decide to diffuse Lemongrass ensure proper ventilation and that your dog is free to leave the room if desired. That being said, puppies and dogs with health conditions may be too sensitive to essential oil exposure. We also do not recommend topical or oral application of essential oils unless advised by an animal aromatherapist. To understand a little more about safe oils for dogs, read this blogpost.
