Concentration is imperative to staying present and focusing on the task at hand but we all get a little foggy sometimes. We lose sleep and our mind wanders. It happens. Thankfully, Peppermint oil is a brilliant solution to drifting thoughts and sore bodies.
Peppermint’s cool and clearing aroma is refreshing with minty layers of sweetness. For aromatherapy, diffuse Peppermint near your desk or gently inhale it to eliminate feelings of grief, worry or heaviness.
A cross between a number of wild mints, Peppermint was first widely discovered in the 17th century. The peppermint plant grows up to 3 feet and has purplish stems and pale-violet flowers. The entire plant is put through a steam distillation process to extract the mint oil which pairs well with other essential oils, such as Frankincense oil, Tea Tree oil and Lavender essential oil.

Pet Safety: Essential oils are generally safe to diffuse around adult cats and dogs intermittently. Ensure the room you’re diffusing in is well-ventilated and that your pet can leave if desired. Discontinue use if you notice any adverse reaction. Avoid topical use and diffusing around young pets, small animals or pets with health problems.
- Few essential oils are quite as effective as Peppermint with aiding the digestive system such as quelling nausea, relieving Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and alleviating indigestion. Using it topically or diffused in a room can help to bring relief of stomach issues. It's also been shown to sharpen the senses, aiding memory and giving you more energy and potentially relieve cognitive disabilities. Its proclivity to ease congestion and open the breath when feeling sick can come at a great relief during cold and flu season. Peppermint is also known for its use in body care as an analgesic and antispasmodic and great in topical skin blends for pain and aches. One recent study has even revealed that Peppermint could be used as a hair growth aid when compared to the hair growth product ingredient minoxidil.
- There is a lot of conflicting information on the web about cats and essential oils. A lot of it is outdated and based on very very old medical research. If you would like to read more on essential oils and a cat's metabolism regarding essential oils, please refer to this article written by a Veterinary doctor who is also an aromatic medical practitioner. The vet says that cats are able to metabolize essential oils adding that “they will not build up over time, although cats can have what we refer to as a different half-life for a chemical, or elimination time” - which includes drugs cats receive from their veterinarian for any procedures or medical issues. However, Edens Garden does not recommend using Peppermint around cats due to negative side effects.
- Peppermint essential oil, known by its latin name, Mentha piperita, is great in carrier oil blends for aches in pains and muscle spasms as well as a topical massage oil for the belly to quell digestive issues and stomach aches. It is cooling oil but using too much or using it undiluted on the skin can potentially cause irritation and a skin-like burn. It also works incredibly well in diffuser blends or steam distilled for headaches as well as in a chest rub to open the breath when feeling congested.
- Consider how many leaves of the peppermint plant it takes to make a small bottle of essential oil. Here at Edens Garden, we want you to remember that pure, undiluted essential oils are incredibly concentrated chemical substances that need to be diluted for safety reasons and we want you to be able to make an educated decision based on facts. Upon ingestion, essential oils including Peppermint essential oil come into contact with mucous membranes that line the mouth, esophagus and stomach. Because essential oils are made up of fat binding constituents, they attach to mucus lined organs which can lead to irritation and damage. Ingesting essential oils can cause users to develop acid reflux, an aching stomach, diarrhea, sore throat, rashes, etc. We cannot express to you enough that if you are using essential oils internally, you should consult an experienced and trained aromatherapist.
- Both Peppermint and Eucalyptus have been shown to cause breathing and neurological problems in young children, and are therefore not recommended to be used on or around infants and young children. Essential oils rich in a natural component called 1,8- cineole, such as Eucalyptus, Ravintsara and Cajeput, along with Peppermint should be avoided altogether in children younger than three years old.

Diffuse & Inhale: Breathe in your favorite essential oils using an essential oil diffuser or personal pocket inhaler. Try inhaling Peppermint oil when feeling motion sickness or have a tension headache, as it's refreshing scent is known to help ease feelings of nausea. SPORTS MASSAGE: Feeling some pain or discomfort from sore muscles? Add to a 2 ounce squeeze bottle: 8 drops of Peppermint, 2 drops of Lavender, 5 drops of Roman Chamomile and 5 drops of Rosemary, then fill with Jojoba oil. Shake to mix well. Massage into sore muscles for a cooling sensation. (1.7% dilution)
BITE AID: In a 1 ounce squeeze bottle add: 5 drops of Peppermint, 2 drops of Helichrysum, 3 drops of Lavender and 1 ounce of aloe vera gel. Apply the diluted Peppermint oil mixture 2-3 times a day or as needed to assist the body's natural process of relieving insect bites. (1.7% dilution)
UPLIFT: Add to a personal inhaler and inhale as needed: 5 drops of Peppermint, 5 drops of Lime and 5 drops of Lemon. Or add Peppermint to a Diffuser and diffuse for 30-60 minutes.
CLEANING SPRAY: To an 8 ounce spray bottle add: 20 drops of Peppermint, 40 drops of Lemon and 30 drops of Tea Tree, then fill with 2 oz grain alcohol and 6 oz distilled water. Shake well before each use.
