How To Layer Skincare For Maximum Benefits

When it comes to achieving radiant, healthy skin, how you apply your skincare can be just as important as what you apply. Whether you're just starting out or looking to fine-tune your skincare regimen, learning to layer your products correctly can unlock the full potential of your routine.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to identify your skin type, build a routine tailored to your unique needs, and properly layer your products—using natural, gentle essentials from Edens Garden like our luxurious Body Oils and moisturizing Carrier Oils.

Identify Your Skin Type

Before you reach for a single product, the first step in skincare success is knowing your skin type. Each skin type has its own needs and sensitivities, and using the wrong ingredients can throw off your skin’s natural balance.[1]

Here’s a quick breakdown of the five main skin types:

  • Oily: Prone to shine, large pores, and breakouts. Needs lightweight, non-comedogenic hydration.

  • Dry: Feels tight, flaky, or rough. Craves moisture and nourishment.

  • Combination: Oily in some areas (usually the T-zone) and dry in others. Requires balance.

  • Sensitive: Easily irritated, red, or reactive. Needs gentle, fragrance-free formulas.

  • Normal: Well-balanced, few concerns. Maintenance and protection are key.

Build Your Routine Based On Your Skin Type

Now that you’ve identified your skin type, the next step is building a routine that supports it. A good skincare regimen doesn’t have to be complicated, it just needs to be consistent and customized.

Key Products for a Balanced Routine:

  • Unscented Cleanser: A gentle start to any routine.

  • Toner: Helps to balance pH and prep skin for hydration. Consider a DIY toner infused with essential oils such as Frankincense or Lavender.

  • Eye Cream: Targets the delicate under-eye area. Ideal for brightening, reducing puffiness, and hydrating.

  • Unscented Facial Moisturizer: Lightweight yet hydrating, perfect for layering under other products.

  • Body Oil or Carrier Oil: Use a nourishing carrier oil like Jojoba, Argan, or Rosehip to seal in moisture.

  • Sunscreen (AM only): A must-have for every skin type. Protects against UV damage and premature aging.

How To Layer Your Skincare Products Properly

When it comes to applying skincare products, it's important to apply products in the correct order. This ensures each product penetrates the skin effectively.[2]

Here’s the recommended order for maximum benefits:

1. Cleanser

Start with a clean slate. Use an Unscented Cleanser to remove impurities without stripping your skin.

2. Toner

Apply a toner with a cotton pad or gently pat it into the skin. It helps balance your skin’s pH and preps it to absorb the next steps more effectively.

3. Eye Cream

This step goes before moisturizer because eye creams are usually lightweight. Use your ring finger to gently tap (not rub) the product around your orbital bone.

4. Serums (optional)

If you’re using targeted serums, such as Essential Oil Blends for brightening, hydration, or acne, apply them after toner and before moisturizer. Let them absorb fully before moving on. Here are a few we recommend:

  • Age Defy: Reach for this blend when you want to address fine lines, wrinkles, and signs of aging. This blend also works to moisturize your skin and impart a natural glow.

  • Best Skin Ever: A great all-around skincare blend for every skin type and protects the skin barrier. Use it to aid healthy skin, strengthen ceramides, and soften skin texture.

  • Face Love: Our preferred skincare blend for wrinkles, makeup removal, dry skin, body care, and daily skincare maintenance. Its aroma is balanced and luxurious.

  • Skin Love: This blend is a fixer of many skin issues and is a great active ingredient for eczema, psoriasis, acne-prone skin, and uneven skin tone.

5. Moisturizer

Lock in hydration with Unscented Facial Moisturizer.

6. Facial Oil or Carrier Oil

This step seals in all the goodness. Choose a carrier oil based on your skin type:

  • Jojoba or Argan for oily/combination skin

  • Rosehip or Avocado for dry/sensitive skin

  • Grapeseed or Hemp Seed for acne-prone skin

Tip: Use 2-3 drops and gently press the oil into your skin, rather than rubbing.

7. Sunscreen (AM Only)

In the morning, always finish with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Sunscreen should be the final layer, applied after all other products.

DIY Essential Oil Toner

Enliven your skin with our skin-tightening face toner. Use our step-by-step guide or customize your own natural toner with your favorite essential oils.

What You Need:

  • 1 oz Distilled Water

  • 1 oz Witch Hazel

  • Solubilizer (manufacturer's recommended amount)

  • Preservative (manufacturer's recommended amount)

  • 12 drops Face Love Blend

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, combine Face Love and your solubilizer in a glass spray bottle. Then add distilled water, witch hazel, and your preservative. Shake to combine. Spritz onto a cotton pad and dab onto your face and neck.

Final Tips for Skincare Success

  • Patch Test: Perform a skin patch test by applying a small amount of new product or essential oils to your inner elbow and wait 6 hours, checking for signs of irritation, before applying to your face.

  • Give It Time: It can take 4–6 weeks to see visible results from a new routine.

  • Stay Consistent: Morning and evening routines are both important.

  • Simplify When Needed: Don’t overload your skin. Start with the basics, then layer in more products as needed.
