USES
Description

A small prickly shrub with fragrant blossoms, Rose can be made into an absolute and an essential oil, depending on how it is extracted. Native to Western Asia and Europe, Bulgarian Rose began to be cultivated in Bulgaria in the 1600's. It is currently produced in a variety of countries including Bulgaria, France, Italy and China.

The history of Rose goes back centuries, and the name comes from a Greek word meaning “red.” Chinese, Romans, Assyrians, and Babylonians prized the Rose for its healing properties. The Romans in particular liked to add rose petals to their bathwater.

To retain as much oil as possible, blossoms are harvested in the early morning when oil content is at its highest. These blossoms are transported to the distillery promptly, where it is distilled in a two-stages to extract as much of the oils as possible. It is said to take as much as 2 tons of rose petals to produce a pound of Rose essential oil.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to make Rose absolute oil?
  • Rose absolute oil is made via solvent extraction. In solvent extraction, a solvent is combined with plant material. The solvent draws the oil out of the plant material, and the solvent and oil are then carefully separated. While it may not be possible to make Rose oil at home, you can make aromatic hydrosol water that contains many of the same therapeutic benefits as essential oil. Click here for instructions on how to make your own hydrosol.
Why is Rose absolute oil so expensive?
  • According to aromatherapist, Andrea Butje, it takes an estimated 30-50 roses to produce a single drop of Rose oil. In order to produce the most oil from roses, the roses must reach full maturity prior to harvesting, which requires additional time and effort. This is one of the primary reasons why Rose oil is considered pricier than other aromatherapy oils. After harvesting, the roses are then carefully solvent extracted. Edens Garden’s high-quality Rose Absolute oil is sourced from expert growers and distillers in Bulgaria.
Can I use Rose absolute oil on my face?
  • Rose Absolute oil is ultra-beneficial toward everyday facial care. There are a few ways to use Rose oil to enjoy its full benefits effectively, including 1.) Dilute it to 1% by combining 6 drops of Rose and 1 oz of carrier oil or unscented lotion. Apply it topically as a skin-nourishing moisturizer. Alternatively, apply this mixture to the face and neck as the last part in your skincare routine. 2.) Create an on-the-go roll-om,n by adding 6 drops Rose in a 10 ml roll-on, then top off with carrier oil. Apply to pulse points such as the neck and wrists.
What is Rose essential oil used for?
  • Rose Absolute oil (Rosa damascena) contributes to all day wellness when used frequently. Skincare lovers adore it for its many skin-nourishing benefits, such as reducing the appearance of acne, dry skin, wrinkles, dark circles and swelling. When inhaled using an essential oil diffuser, Rose oil balances emotions and can even release aphrodisiac properties. The classic and sophisticated aroma of Rose is often added to high-end perfumes for its lovely, floral aura. If you’re in search of a new skincare savior, Rose is a prime pick.
Can you add Rose absolute oil to water?
  • When mixed with water, Rose absolute oil will float on top and not mix into the water. In order to combine the Rose oil in water, you will need a solubilizer such as Polysorbate 20 or 190-proof grain alcohol. We like to use 190-proof grain alcohol because it combines essential oil in water while also preserving the product. Between 20-30% of your formulation should be 190-proof grain alcohol to effectively solubilize the essential oil in water and preserve your product. A simple formula you can follow is combining 40 drops of Rose oil with 1 oz 190-proof grain alcohol. Let it sit for a few hours before adding 3 oz distilled water. Shake gently to combine and store in a cool, dry area.
